AFTER years of lobbying for tougher laws to shut down illegal brothels, Wollongong councillor Janice Kershaw has good news.

Premier Morris Iemma said this weekend if re-elected he would give authorities more powers to crack down on illegal brothels.

"I have been fighting the spread of illegal brothels in the city for many years and the Premier's plan is good news for the community," Cr Kershaw said.

"Wollongong will benefit from the targeting of repeat offenders who, when caught in one location often pay fines and then relocate to a new suburb. These people will face an increasing regime of penalties.

"I welcome the clarifying of the law to ensure it is not necessary to have direct evidence of actual acts of prostitution to establish that a premises is operating as an illegal brothel."

Mr Iemma said the new laws would include the granting of interim orders cutting electricity, gas and water supply to suspected illegal brothels.
